How Mountains Are Made (Let's Read and Find Out) 自然科学启蒙2:山是怎
Grade 2-3-In this clear, concise presentation, four childrenintroduce the subject of mountain formation by taking a hike intheir local community. The youngsters appear throughout the book, commenting in dialogue bubbles about specific facts, givingdemonstrations of ways mountains change, or making humorous asides. They provide continuity and keep the tone light while informationis related to explain why fossils of sea animals are found atopmountains, the various layers in the earth, why volcanoes form, andthe effects of erosion. The text and illustrations work togetherwell in this sequential, well-organized book. Much credit goes toHale's engaging watercolor illustrations done in cheery colors;they are simply drawn but add effective examples and diagrams. Usedwith Franklyn Branley's Volcanoes (HarperCollins, 1985), this fineaddition to the science series would be of value to studentsinterested in the geology and the changes of planetEarth. Ages 5-9. What Makes Day and Night (Let's Read and Find Out) 自然科学启蒙2:白
This is an enormous improve ment over the 1961 edition: lessrepeti tive, much clearer in presentation and more specific aboutphysical phenome na. However, brevity causes some of theexplanations to be oversimplified, and some further explanationsmay be necessary. The illustrations are better, featuring clear, colorful and sometimes mildly silly scenes that add some playfulness. The simple science experiment remains from the oldedition, and Bran ley has included a new discussion of day andnight on the moon, as well as a photo of our planet taken fromspace. Gail Gibbons' Sun Up, Sun Down (HBJ, 1983) is a broader, shallower treatment.

What Will the Weather Be? (Let's Read and Find Out) 自然科学启蒙2:
Kindergarten-Grade 4-- While such concepts as cold and warmfronts are clearly explained and effectively illustrated, so manyterms are introduced here that young readers may come away a bitconfused about barometers, anemometers, wind vanes, hygrometers, and air pressure. This is still good introductory material to whatcan be a complex topic, and it could be used effectively iffollowed by class discussion. Illustrations are brightly coloredand friendly, featuring the same boy, girl, and cat on most pages.Titles for the same audience include Kirkpatrick's Look at Weather(Raintree, 1985) and Rogers's What Will the Weather Be LikeToday?

Fossils Tell of Long Ago (Let's Read and Find Out) 自然科学启蒙2:化
In this revised edition, Aliki has revamped the previousfour-color edition with lively full-color illustrations, alsoadding the pointed, conversational observations of children as theymake discoveries along with readers. In clear, precise language, she explains how dinosaur tracks are cast in mud, how insectstrapped in sticky tree sap harden into amber, and how fossils oftropical plants are found in very cold places. The childrenpopulating these pages are boys and girls of every color, on footor in wheelchair, all of them active observers with scientificcuriosities; they are apparently making these discoveries in amuseum, marveling and enjoying the bits of history cast in stone. The book closes with a suggestion for creating a one-minute fossilby making a clay imprint of a hand, letting it dry, and burying itfor someone to find a million years from now. School and publiclibraries will want to replace the old edition with this one.

What Is the World Made Of? (Let's Read and Find Out) 自然科学启蒙2
Grade 1-3-A fact-filled, accessible study of solids, liquids, and gases. The book gives examples of each state of matter and somesimple activities that demonstrate the attributes of each. The lastpage presents three related science experiments. The author's useof sentence fragments, such as "Water flowing in the creek," isbothersome, but the humorous illustrations add to the text andprovide a good mix of children of both genders and various racesenjoying science. The page layout makes this title suitable for usewith groups; the easy-to-read text makes it a good choice forindependent reading and research. Teachers will delight in theclear definitions and examples used to introduce concepts that areoften offered on a much higher level. Once again the Let's-Read-and-Find-Out-about Science series takeson a really difficult concept and dramatizes it with hands-onexamples from everyday life. This time, the concept is the threestates of matter: solid, liquid, and gas. The explanations areclear with a sim

Digging Up Dinosaurs [Reading Rainbow Book] 恐龙化石(美国彩虹阅读好书榜)
The most notable change in this revision isthe pictures: bright cray on-colored drawings have replaced thedrab gray and green illustrations of the earlier edition. Thehand-lettered cap tions and the dialogue in balloons have beenslightly enlarged, making them easier to read. Textual changes areslight; Brontosaurus is now called Apa tosaurus, and some pageshave been combined to streamline the book. Al though the 1981edition already depict ed both men and women and people of diverseethnic backgrounds, it's nice to be greeted by a smiling femalepaleon tologist on the cover of the new edition. There's not muchnew information here, but the packaging is certainly more timelyand appealing.

The push for students to excel at school and get into the best colleges has never been more intense. In this invaluable new book, the" "bestselling co-author of "Raising Cain" addresses America's performance-driven obsession with the accomplishments of its kids-and provides a deeply humane response."How was school?" These three words contain a world of desire on the part of parents to know what their children are learning and experiencing in school each day. Children may not divulge much, but psychologist Michael Thompson suggests that the answers are there if we know how to read the clues and-equally important-if we remember our own school days.School, Thompson reminds us, occupies more waking hours than kids spend at home; and school is full not just of studies but of human emotion-excitement, fear, envy, love, anger, sexuality, boredom, competitiveness. Through richly detailed interviews, case histories, and student e-mail journals, including those of his own children, Thompson illuminates the deeper psych
