Be a Friend to Trees (Let's Read and Find Out) 自然科学启蒙2:跟大树做朋
Why should you be a friend to trees? Trees are a valuable natural resource. People depend on treesfor food, and animals depend on trees for food and shelter. Butmost important, we depend on trees because they add oxygen, a gaswe all need, to the air. While trees give us many wonderfulproducts, we must also protect them because we can't live withoutthem.

How Mountains Are Made (Let's Read and Find Out) 自然科学启蒙2:山是怎
Grade 2-3-In this clear, concise presentation, four childrenintroduce the subject of mountain formation by taking a hike intheir local community. The youngsters appear throughout the book, commenting in dialogue bubbles about specific facts, givingdemonstrations of ways mountains change, or making humorous asides. They provide continuity and keep the tone light while informationis related to explain why fossils of sea animals are found atopmountains, the various layers in the earth, why volcanoes form, andthe effects of erosion. The text and illustrations work togetherwell in this sequential, well-organized book. Much credit goes toHale's engaging watercolor illustrations done in cheery colors;they are simply drawn but add effective examples and diagrams. Usedwith Franklyn Branley's Volcanoes (HarperCollins, 1985), this fineaddition to the science series would be of value to studentsinterested in the geology and the changes of planetEarth. Ages 5-9. Almost Gone (Let's Read and Find Out) 自然科学启蒙2:全都不见了ISBN97800
From Booklist Gr. 1-3. Caldecott HonorBook illustrator Jenkins applies his considerable talents to thecause of conservation in this book in the long-runningLet's-Read-and-Find-Out Science series. Using his signature cut-andtorn-paper collages, he shows 21 endangered species, accompanyingeach image with a few sentences about the animal's habitat, aparticular characteristic, and, sometimes, the reason for itsendangered status. The art is not to scale, but Jenkins often worksin text references to give kids an idea of relative size: a YangtzeRiver Dolphin "may grow to be eight feet long"; an Assam rabbitweighs "four or five pounds." As usual, Jenkins' artwork isfascinating. His papers, apparently handpainted, are carefullymatched to catch subtle variations of an animal's skin or a senseof the shagginess of its coat. The last spreads consider fourextinct animals and three species brought back from the brink bybreeding or protection programs. A map designating the range ofeach species concludes this nicely accom

Germs Make Me Sick! [Let's Read and Find Out,Reading Rainbow
This easy-to-read revision of a 1985 title effectivelydescribes the differences between bacteria and viruses and givesother related germy facts. The science is related in simplelanguage and the author uses specific examples that youngsters willreadily understand. He explains how germs sometimes "slip in" thebody despite defense mechanisms such as skin, nose, and throat."Your friend has a cold. She sneezes. Germs fly out. You breathethe air. Some of her germs may get into your lungs." Hafner'spen-and-ink and watercolor artwork is attractive and informative, reinforcing the concepts introduced in the text. An interestingaddition for libraries not having the previous edition. Gr. 2^-3. This revised version of an outstandingLet's-Read-and-Find Out Science title is larger in size than theoriginal book published 10 years ago. There are very few changes inBerger's text, which deals directly with how bacteria and virusesspread infection in daily life and how the body fights back.Hafner's lively color cart

Fossils Tell of Long Ago (Let's Read and Find Out) 自然科学启蒙2:化
In this revised edition, Aliki has revamped the previousfour-color edition with lively full-color illustrations, alsoadding the pointed, conversational observations of children as theymake discoveries along with readers. In clear, precise language, she explains how dinosaur tracks are cast in mud, how insectstrapped in sticky tree sap harden into amber, and how fossils oftropical plants are found in very cold places. The childrenpopulating these pages are boys and girls of every color, on footor in wheelchair, all of them active observers with scientificcuriosities; they are apparently making these discoveries in amuseum, marveling and enjoying the bits of history cast in stone. The book closes with a suggestion for creating a one-minute fossilby making a clay imprint of a hand, letting it dry, and burying itfor someone to find a million years from now. School and publiclibraries will want to replace the old edition with this one.

This simple geology book goes on to discuss the formation, hardness, types, and uses of rock. The coverage is cursory, yet itis sufficiently engaging to hold the interest of a young audience.Keller's illustrations, line drawings with watercolor washes, workwell in showing the cross-sections of earth and volcanoes. Twochildren appear in many of the scenes, exploring a Roman road, finding fossils, mixing cement, and collecting rocks to store inboxes and egg cartons. A few pages feature photographs, allowingmore realistic views of various rock types. Another goodintroductory book from the Let's-Read-and-Find-Out series.

Wiggling Worms at Work (Let's Read and Find Out) 自然科学启蒙2:在工作
This is a great book marred by a few unclear pictures. Thewell-organized text explains how worms improve the quality of soiland covers the basics about the animal's body structure, movement, diet, and reproduction. The writing is clear and engaging; in oneinstance, Pfeffer compares the segments on a worm's body to "thecoils on a Slinky toy." Although the collage artwork is visuallyappealing, some of the images are a bit confusing. In oneillustration accompanying the explanation of how a worm tunnels, the creature looks as if it has been chopped in two or torn up. Inanother, it looks as if it is decomposing. The book ends withsuggestions for examining a worm in the field and ascience-fair-type project using castings. Better choices includeKevin Holmes's Earthworms (Bridgestone, 1998), Michael ElsohnRoss's Wormology (Carolrhoda, 1996), and Bobbie Kalman's SquirmyWormy Composters (Crabtree, 1992; o.p.). K-Gr. 3. The most notable change in this revision is thepictures: bright cray on-colored drawings have replaced the drabgray and green illustrations of the earlier edition. Thehand-lettered cap tions and the dialogue in balloons have beenslightly enlarged, making them easier to read. Textual changes areslight; Brontosaurus is now called Apa tosaurus, and some pageshave been combined to streamline the book. Al though the 1981edition already depict ed both men and women and people of diverseethnic backgrounds, it's nice to be greeted by a smiling femalepaleon tologist on the cover of the new edition. There's not muchnew information here, but the packaging is certainly more timelyand appealing.

Grade 1-3 Another excellent addition to this science seriesthat has opened up a host of subjects to young readers. This booktells what tornadoes look like, why they occur, when they occur, and what to do when one strikes. A few incidents of disastroustornadoes are mentioned, such as the time when a tornado inMinnesota lifted a passenger train from its tracks and carried it80 feet through the air. The writing is clear, concise, andrhythmic. Maestro's color drawings are also clear andunderstandable, and fit well with the book's design. This book isfor younger audiences than Fradin's Disaster ! Planets in Our Solar System, The (Let's Read and Find Out) 自
Originally published in 1981, this title gets a facelift withthe addition of some new information, including a brief list of Websites, plus new illustrations. Though given to dogmatic statementslike "The most important part of the solar system is the sun,"Branley makes his points briefly and precisely, steering clear ofdistracting dialogue and side commentary. Also, rather than themore common one-planet-after-the-other tour, he groups togetherheavenly bodies, discussing temperature, size, and orbital lengthin comparative terms; the effect is to reinforce the idea of thesolar system as a system rather than an assemblage of isolatedelements. He finishes with instructions for a planetary mobile andseveral other simple projects. O'Malley creates a rudimentary storyline in his illustrations, in which an African-American version ofMs. Frizzle guides a class around a planetarium, and inserts smallastronomical photos into his cartoon scenes. Still one of the mostbasic books on the subject, this is a welcome re
