The subject of this book is the confrontation between theAmerican reform tradition, historically inward-looking, and thefirst of the world conflicts in which the United States has beeninvolved in the twentieth century. It focuses upon those writersand journals most prominently associated with 'the progressivemovement' and examines their response to the First World War andthe effect of the war on their thinking.
