COMPLETE SHORTER FIC-MELVILLE(ISBN=9780375400681)
We are, perhaps, after a century of literary wastelands, ableto read not only a personal predicament but a general truth inMelville's blasted islands, bedevilled slave ships, misshapenhouses, falling towers, ticking tables, ghastly factories, sicklycottages, and blank brick city walls. The appetite for truth iswhat gives Melville's narratives their persistent interest and, even under the spell of discouragement, their untoward verbalenergy ... Like Billy Budd, Melville when a sailor on a man-of-warwas a top-man, at home on the highest yards, enjoying the widestview ... Melville instinctively aspired to the grandest scale, andeven in his shorter works offers vast inklings and the resonance ofcosmic concerns. -- Review Herman Melville (1819-91) broughtas much genius to the smaller-scale literary forms as he did to thefull-blown novel: his poems and the short stories and novellascollected in this volume reveal a deftness and a delicacy of touchthat is in some ways even more impressive than the massive,te

The St. Charles Players do acredible job on the major roles, but some of the group responses, such as "Aye, aye Captain," sound more comic than serious. Billy Budd, Sailor has been called the best short novel ever written. In his brilliantly condensed narrative prose, Herman Melville fashions a legal parable in which reason and intellect prove incapable of preserving innocence in the face of evil. For all those who feel themselves threatened by a hostile and inflexible environment, there is special significance in this haunting story of a handsome sailor who becomes a victim of man's intransigence. Since its posthumous publication in 1924, Billy Budd has become one of the acknowledged masterpieces of American literature.

作者简介 Herman Melville was born in 1819 in New York City. After his father's death he left school for a series of clerical jobs before going to sea as a young man of nineteen. At twenty-one he shipped aboard the whaler Acushnet and began a series of adventures in the South Seas that would last for three years and form the basis for his first two novels, Typee and Omoo. Although these two novels sold well and gained for Melville a measure of fame, nineteenth-century readers were puzzled by the experiments with form that he began with his third novel, Mardi, and continued brilliantly in his masterpiece, Moby-Dick. During his later years spent working as a customs inspector on the New York docks, Melville published only poems, compiled in a collection entitled Battle-Pieces, and died in 1891 with Billy Budd, Sailor, now considered a classic, still unpublished.
