Mary Pope Osborne grew up in the military, and by the time she was fifteen had lived in Oklahoma, Austria, Florida and four different army posts in Virginia and North Carolina. After graduating from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the early 1970's, Mary traveled all over Europe, and spent the first six weeks of her trip living in a cave on the island of Crete. She then joined up with a group of European young people and traveled in rickety vans through sixteen Asian countries, including Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and Nepal. She was a bartender, an acting teacher, a waitress, a travel agent, a window dresser, and a medical assistant -- all before becoming an author! In February 1993, Mary was elected the 27th president of the Author's Guild, the oldest, most established organization for writers in the United States.

From Booklist PreS-Gr. 2. McMillan makes a successful departure from his many noted photo-essays, such as Nights of the Pufflings (1995). Sticking to a bird theme, he has created a simple, humorous tale about chickens with pretensions of becoming women. The village ladies are frustrated because they cannot reach the eggs the wild birds lay on the sides of cliffs. Little do they suspect that the chickens they buy will hatch a new set of problems. The hens decide to do everything the ladies do--pick blueberries, go to birthday parties, have tea--until they are too busy to lay eggs. A fine artist and first-time children's book illustrator, Gunnella makes the transition to picture books quite well: the rotund ladies and irrepressible hens, portrayed in flat, colorful, thickly painted folk-art style, aptly complement the tone of the story. Customer Reviews Dingoes at Dinnertime, April 3 2000 Reviewer: A customer I was almost as excited as my 8 year old daughter when she finishedreading this wonderous adventure, completing the four part seriesto break Teddy's spell. It had been tough getting her to read, until I found the Magic Tree House series. She really enjoyed theadventure and the involvement of animals as characters in thestory. I like the fact that at the end of each story is "More Factsfor You and Jack" - reinforcing the educational elements of thestory.
