Bag of Bones is partly inspired by Daphne du Maurier's classic Rebecca, but there's more than homage in this novel of horror and romance. Like du Maurier's Manderley, King's scary old place (on the shore of Maine's remote Dark Score Lake) is haunted by the late lady of the manor. There are many gory ghosts afoot, though: men, women, and wailing kids. The hero, a thriller novelist, stirs up hell's plenty of angry shades while investigating his wife's death. It turns out she either had a dark secret herself or was onto some dread scandal lurking in Dark Score Lake. As in King's previous book, Wizard and Glass, the fabric of reality is thin, and nosy narrators are in peril of plunging right out of this world and into a rather hostile otherworld. Bag of Bones is a writer-haunted book, too. The spirits of Herman Melville and Ray Bradbury are deeply felt, and so are the tale's two romances (the hero muses on his marriage and falls for a young single mom with a marvelous, psychic daughter). There is also good-humor

Something was happening in Bobbi Anderson's idyllic small townof Haven, Maine. Something that gave every man, woman and childpowers far beyond ordinary mortals. "King is at the top of his game." (Entertainment Weekly)Anotice to those who feel that Stephen King has lost his magictouch: Desperation is the genuine goods. The ensemble cast ofordinary Americans thrown together by chance, including adisgruntled alcoholic writer and a child who is wise beyond hisyears, may be a bit too familiar. But the nearly deserted Nevadamining town with an enormous haunted mine pit and an abandonedmovie theatre where the survivors hang out makes for a strikingbattleground, and the grisly action rarely flags. Best of all, though, are the characters of Tak, the ancient body-hopping evilwho emerges from the mine, and of "God"--whom the New York Timesdescribes as "the edgiest creation in Desperation. Remote, isolated, ironic, shrouded behind disguises, perhaps 'anotherlegendary shadow,' this deity forms a sly foil, and an icy mirror,to Tak."

This is one of the most haunted character pieces he's ever written. Horrific. Tragic. And absolutely beautiful Damon Lindelof, co-creator and writer of Lost Fresh and frightening and highly recommended Observer King has become such a sophisticated writer that this novel is never less than page-turning ... The Stand 斯蒂芬-金小说《末日逼近》9780451169532
"The Stand...is a book that has everything. Adventure, romance, prophecy, allegory, satire, fantasy, realism, apocalypse." -- The New York Times Book ReviewIn 1978, science fiction writer Spider Robinson wrote a scathing review of The Stand in which he exhorted his readers to grab strangers in bookstores and beg them not to buy it. The Stand is like that. You either love it or hate it, but you can't ignore it. Stephen King's most popular book, according to polls of his fans, is an end-of-the-world scenario: a rapidly mutating flu virus is accidentally released from a U.S. military facility and wipes out 99 and 44/100 percent of the world's population, thus setting the stage for an apocalyptic confrontation between Good and Evil. "I love to burn things up," King says. "It's the werewolf in me, I guess.... The Stand was particularly fulfilling, because there I got a chance to scrub the whole human race, and man, it was fun! ... Much of the compulsive, driven feeling I had while I worked on The Stand

The story unfolds in one continuous chapter, told in the firstperson by the cranky, 65-year-old housekeeper, Dolores, who isexplaining to police officers and a stenographer how and why shekilled her husband, Joe, 30 years ago. At the same time, in herrambling monologue, she insists that she did not kill her longtimeemployer, Vera Donovan--notwithstanding what the residents ofLittle Tall Island may be whispering. Joe was a drinker, and, asDolores gradually argues, he deserved to die for the horrifyingcrimes he committed against his family. But Vera, despite hercantankerous disposition as a lady governing her decaying estatewith her precise rules about even the most mundane household chore("Six pins! Remember to use six pins! Don't you let the wind blowmy good sheets down to the corner of the yard!"), was a goodwoman--or at least not an evil one. She was the woman who hired theyoung Dolores and kept her on even after Dolores got pregnantagain. Dolores cleaned and cared for her even as the old matronfaded

Hearing the late Frank Muller narrate Stephen King's thriller islike a welcome visit from an old friend. Muller, who died in 2008,left behind a tremendous legacy of work, including a series ofrecordings of King books recently re-released. The story of adisturbed boy who becomes entwined in the life of an unrepentantformer Nazi is one of King's most frightening works, even withoutvampires or things that go bump in the night. The novella is farsuperior to the movie of the same name. King, with more than alittle help from Muller, explores the internal workings of the boyand his mentor in ways the movie could not. Bravo.
